Ground Covers

Helianthemum hummularium- Sunrose 'Wisley Pink', 6 to 8 in. x 2 ft., evergreen, gray leaves, with pink flower in spring, little water.


Veronica umbrasa- 'Georgia Blue', 6 to 8 in. x 2 to 3 ft., evergreen, sun to part shade, bright blue flowers in spring, leaves turn reddish green in fall, regular water.

Calylophus drummondianus- Sundrops, 1-1/2 ft. x 2 ft., evergreen, yellow flowers spring to fall, little water, full sun to part shade.

Shrubs

Leonotis leonuris- Lion's Tail, 4 to 6 ft. x 4 to 6 ft., evergreen, tall shrub with orange flowers that look like a lion's tail, blooms in summer, little to no water.

Cistus ladanifer- Crimson Spot Rock Rose, 3 to 5 ft. x 3 to 5 ft., evergreen, white flower with crimson spot on each petal base, flowers in spring and some in summer, little to no water.

Salvia leucantha- 'Santa Barbara', 2 1/2 ft. x 3 to 4 ft., rosy lavender purple spike flowers, blooms summer to fall, cut back in winter, regular to light water.

Echium wildpretii- Tower of Jewels, biennial, 6 to 10 ft. x 1 1/2 ft., bi-annual, full sun to part shade, tall cone shape with masses of flowers the second year, dies late in the season but reseeds with new plants in the following spring, regular to little water.

Pittosporum tenuifolium- 'Silver Sheen', 15 ft. x 15 ft., evergreen, part shade, can be pruned to any size, makes a good hedge, small purple flowers, leaves light green on top and silver underneath, shimmer in wind, very elegant, regular water.

Grasses

Carex albula- 'Frosty Curls' Sedge, 1 1/2 ft. x 3 ft., full sun to part shade, evergreen, clumping, arching, silver green color, good in mass foreground plantings, little water.

Carex divulsa- Berkeley Sedge, 1 1/2 ft. x 2 ft., evergreen, part shade, dense emerald green blades, green heads turn brown with age, can reseed, don't overwater.

Chrondopetalum tectorum- Compact Cape Rush, 2 to 3 ft. x 3 to 4 ft., evergreen, elegant tall dark green stems with papery bracts at each joint and slender dark brown flower heads, looks good year around.

Mulenbergia capillaris- Pink Muhly, 2 1/2 ft. x 3 ft., semi evergreen, full sun to part shade, irridescent pink flower heads in September.

Natives

Heuchera maxima- Island Alum Root, native to Channel Islands, part shade, 1 to 2 ft. x 3 to 4 ft., evergreen, large clumping coral bells, pinkish white blossoms in spring, good ground cover, little water, part shade.

Fremontodendron- 'Ken Taylor', full sun, 3 to 4 ft. x 6 to 8 ft., large yellow flowers in spring, smallest Fremontia, spectacular, no water once established.

Arctostaphylos- 'Dr. Hurd' Manzanita, tall shrub or small tree, large leaves, white flowers, picturesque crooked branching habit, mahogany colored bark, no water once established.

Ceanothus thyrsiflorus- 'Skylark' Blue Mountain Lilac, 3 to 6 ft. x 5 ft., medium blue flowers over long season, tolerates summer water but needs none once established.

Trees

Vitex agnus-castus- Chaste Tree, deciduous, 25 ft. x 25 ft., small, fast growing, loves the heat, lavender-blue flowers all summer.

Chilopsis linearus- 'Burgundy' Desert Willow, deciduous, 15 to 30 ft. x 10 to 20 ft., small, fast growing, trumpet-shaped purple flowers spring to fall.

Pistacia chinensis- 'Keith Davies' Pistache, 30 to 50 ft. x 30 to 50 ft., deciduous, male grafted selection, not grown from seed.

Tilia cordata- Littleleaf Linden, 30 to 50 ft. x 15 to 30 ft., Deciduous, excellent lawn or street tree, dense shade.

Pyrus calleryana- 'Autumn Blaze', 35 to 40 ft. x 20 ft., deciduous, hardiest of callery pears, good structure, crimson fall color develops early.
